Americans Favor Voluntary Personal Accounts

Public Wants Both Parties to Work Together on Solution for Social Security

A Zogby International poll shows that more Americans favor voluntary personal accounts, believe Democrats are obligated to work with Republicans to make Social Security solvent and do not believe Social Security will be there for them when they retire.

  • A majority of likely voters (52% to 40%) favor voluntary personal retirement accounts. Importantly, 66% of voters under 30 are proponents of the accounts.
  • By an overwhelming 70% to 22% margin, voters said that Congressional Democrats should come up with proposals of their own, instead of continuing to "just say no." Even the majority of Democrats (55%) believe their party should take action.
  • Nearly two out of three of voters do not believe that Social Security will be able to pay all promised future benefits. Younger voters are particularity skeptical—over 70% of voters under 30 do not anticipate receiving full benefits when they retire.

All Americans deserve an opportunity to have their very own nest eggs and the peace of mind that they will receive benefits from a solvent Social Security system. Congress must do what's best for the American people, not play partisan politics.

Fix Social Security Now.

The poll of 1,006 likely voters, conducted for the Cato Institute from May 23 - 25, has a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percent.
