Students Hope to Sway Congress on Accounts

"Dozens of college students who support the accounts plan to spend Wednesday afternoon lobbying members of the Senate Finance Committee—after a news conference staged amid imported snow and ice sculptures in the summer haze hanging over the capital.

'"The imagery has multiple meanings,' said Jonathan Swanson, a Yale University senior who co-founded Students for Saving Social Security. 'It can mean, 'Our future melting away,' or, 'Congress is giving us the cold shoulder,' or, 'Congress is freezing us out of the debate,' or anything else catchy you can think of.'"

Opposing Groups To Target Key Lawmakers During Recess

"In a memo circulated Wednesday at a CoMPASS meeting, coalition leaders highlighted statements by House Ways and Means Chairman Thomas and Grassley that indicate legislative momentum. The memo suggests that CoMPASS would encourage Republicans to move the process forward while also challenging Democrats.

'"[W]e should bear in mind the broader objective of our coalition: to keep the legislative process on Social Security moving forward and to support those efforts,' the memo stated. 'And in working to move the debate forward, we also want to keep the pressure on those who oppose any action to engage in the debate.'"

Montana State Representatives and Generations Together Urge Congress to Reform Social Security

"State Senator Gary Perry, along with a group known as Generations Together, gathered in Bozeman this morning to promote Social Security reform through personal retirement accounts.

"Sen. Gary Perry said, 'Our Social Security system is failing. In the next twelve years social security will be paying out more in benefits than it receives in contributions.'"


Social Security Reform Group Puts Pressure on Baucus

"Several Montana lawmakers threw their support behind a campaign for Social Security reform Tuesday."

"State Senators Corey Stapleton, R-Billings, and Kelly Gebhardt, R-Roundup, along with State Representative Elsie Arntzen, R-Billings, said privatizing Social Security will preserve the system for future generations. Stapleton said the Social Security issue will soon turn into a 'generational debate.' 'For us, it's a no-brainer that social security should change fundamentally and give us options to take ownership and potentially have more in retirement,' Stapleton said."

Students for Saving Social Security (SSSS) held a rally in support of personal retirement accounts outside Congress. SSSS Communications Director Ben Ferguson said "If you don't support personal retirement accounts, you don't support young Americans."

Generations Together supporters attended Celebrate! West Hartford, an annual festival that draws more than 30,000 attendees. Supporters talked to people about the need for Social Security reform and distributed Generations Together literature.
