As Social Security Celebrates Its 70th Birthday, Congress Must Fix the Program and Ensure Retirement Security for Future Generations
|
 |
While Social Security celebrates its 70th birthday on August 14, future generations of retirees may be left with only crumbs unless the program is fixed.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935, creating a program that has provided millions of Americans with retirement security. Now, 70 years later, Social Security is in trouble and will not be there for today's younger workers.
Congress must return from August recess and reach a real solution that protects and improves Social security for the next 70 years—and beyond.
Real reform must:
- Protect benefits for seniors and those nearing retirement.
- Put the program on a path to long-term solvency.
- Create new voluntary personal retirement accounts for younger workers.
- Ensure that taxes are not increased on employers or employees.
Let's make sure that future generations of Americans have something to celebrate when they retire.
Fix Social Security Now.
