Congress Must Make Social Security Reform A Priority This Year
Congress has accomplished a great deal this year and continues to show strong and decisive leadership with relief efforts in the wake of the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
But the work of this Congress will not be complete without passage of retirement security reform this fall.
Social Security is critical for America's seniors, and there is no question that the system is on a path to insolvency that will jeopardize the retirement security of future generations.
Pushing reform into the future only makes the issue more difficult to solve and passes the cost on to future generations.
Getting a Social Security fix through Congress yet this year will not be easy, but it can be done if members of both parties make it a priority.
