Poll of College Students Shows Deep Concerns about Social Security

A new national poll released April 19 by Harvard University's Institute of Politics finds many of America's college students are concerned Social Security will not pay out benefits when they retire, with students significantly more likely to support investment of Social Security taxes in voluntary personal retirement accounts than the general public.

KEY FINDINGS:

70 Percent Don't Think Social Security Will Be There When They Retire

  • Seven out of ten of college students are somewhat or very concerned Social Security will not pay out benefits when they retire.

More Than Half Support Voluntary Personal Retirement Accounts

  • Fifty-two percent support changing Social Security to include personal retirement accounts, while nearly 38 percent would rather stay in the current system and risk a payout shortfall.

The survey of 1,206 college students was drawn randomly from a national database of nearly 5.1 million students. Click here to read the survey's executive summary.
