Nearly Six in Ten Americans Believe They Can't Count On Social SecurityAn American Viewpoint poll of 1,000 adults, conducted April 22-26, found that 59 percent of Americans think that Social Security will not be able to pay for their retirement, while only 29 percent believe that Social Security will be available to them when they retire. The finding that nearly six in 10 Americans worry that Social Security will not be able to pay for their retirement is a 16-point increase over the same question in a February Newsweek poll, when 43 percent said they did not think Social Security would be able to pay all of the retirement benefits they are owed. The American people are right to be concerned. Today there are about 40 million retirees receiving Social Security benefits, and by the time all the Baby Boomers have retired, there will be more than 72 million retirees drawing benefits. But while the number of retirees continues to grow, the number of workers paying into the system dwindles. Workers of all ages deserve to be able to count on a secure retirement. It's time to act. Fix Social Security now. |
